Download Linux for free

23rd October 2007

This is the best Linux version I’ve tried, easy to install and has a nice and user friendly layout. There are many versions of Linux out there, and while some people have their own preferences I can recommend this one for everyone, including those who wish to try Linux for the first time, since it installs usually without any problems. That is often a problem with other releases.

Congratulations Kaspersly Lab

21st October 2007

Happy Birthday to a 10 year old with an old mans wisdom and expertise. The anti-virus and internet security company Kaspersky has been my favourite for years, probably 4 now, after I skipped Symantec’s Norton (mainly due to the heavy system resources), but Kaspersky has also proven the last years to outmatch any other anti-virus software out there in many conducted tests! Briefly;

This Russian security company (which is now 10 years old) can boast to probably have the best detection rate of protecting you against new and undiscovered viruses, still it is much more light-weight than say Norton and McAfee, meaning smaller installation and draws much less system resources giving you the capability to work more freely while knowing you are protected by the BEST.

You can have hourly updates, or choose how often it should update itself, or do it manually; you have the choice. The Internet Security Suite comes with anything you could want to stay secure; all are superb utilites AND you can customize them or turn off any of them whenever you wish; you are in control if you are a power user. They include:
Mail Anti-Virus, Web Anti-Virus, Proactive Defense, Anti-Spy, Anti-Hacker, Anti-Spam.
- Too much to digest? To put it in a more common laymans language; you are protected! It’s like wearing multiple condoms at the same time.

Viruses? They won’t get to you, internet firewall (anti-hacker as they call it, somebody get a bit confused) very good, spam filter ok (needs a bit of training though), and with all the other active defenses your computer is as safe as Fort Knox. One thing though, is that it will ask or inform you with a small pop-up in the right-down corner whenever it detects something suspicion or straight out dangerous. I like that! I want to know. If you don’t, you can tell it not to do in most cases.

Better Windows copy function

20th October 2007

The copy function in Windows is as we all know useless. For example when copying a large number of files, and and one error occures it simply cuts out, leaving up to you to find out exactly what already has been copied. You cannot pause/resume copying, and in the case of power failure or similar you don’t know where to pick up.

This small little freeare program fixes all that, and more. It is even faster than Windows’ own copy function. Totalcopy is your answer.

How to start Windows in safe mode

19th October 2007

This should work on all Windows from 95 up to Vista on all computer manufacturers, when your computers start up you start tapping the F8 key. You can start doing it gently just after the POST screen disappears, or do it frantically from the very beginning. The result should be the the same, a menu appears which allows you to start Windows in safe mode.

Start Windows in safe mode: Tap the F8 key during start up, and choose safe mode from the menu.

Your cup of tea?

13th October 2007

Need a break? Instad of a cup of tea why not try out some of the small, fast, easy to play flash games from teagames. Just go to their web site, it’s all free and don’t need any registration etc. Simply choose a game and within a minute you’re playing it.

Of course this cannot rival “true” PC games, Playstation, Xbox etc. but it’s fast paced, free, rather fun and usually (?) will not require your attention at hours in one session as some large games might.

The different motorcross games are very popular, otherwise there should be something most people can enjoy during a tea break.

Opera - but not what you think

12th October 2007

I love Opera, the web browser that is, but this post is not about that, maybe later there will be one. I have never been a fan of opera music though, this kind of changed my mind a bit. For a couple of reasons. It proves that you can come from anywhere and not being anyone famous or born rich, but due to talents, intellect and hard work make it. Just listen to it.

Spamfighter

11th October 2007

Are you tired of spam? If not, you cannot have had an email account for long. I think that you are tired of spam since you have found this blog, not because we would ever spam you but because it means you use the internet. I hate spam! And to combat that in an efficient way, including being able to go through the emails which my anti-spam program removes (just in case it was not spam) I feel rather comfortable using Spamfighter these days. It integrates well with Outlook incl. Outlook Express and related Microsoft Windows services.

Spamfighter is free, but if you wish they also have a commercial version. Personally I have used the free version for a long time and is very happy with it. It beats any other anti-spam softwares I’ve tried, and even if your web hosting server has an anti-spam filter it seldoms work very well, and you cannot always check the e-mails which they removed and thought were spam in case they deleted a message for you which was not spam.

Whenever you checks your mail all suspected spam emails will be moved to the designated spam folder, to keep your inbox clean. The program also comes with the ability to setup the spam filtering functions of course; how “hard” should the spam filter be, and black list and white list.

According to the company themselves this was what they had written today if you search for them on any of the major search engines which will display the content: “spamfighter is Europe’s leading Spam Filter developer, providing Spam Protection across the globe for more than three million home and corporate users.”

To make this story shorter you can read more and download a great piece of software here:

www.spamfighter.com

And NO! I/we are not affiliated with them in any way, this blog is for free.
Note: If you are using the free version the software will automatically insert a text at the bottom of every email you send saying that you are using the “free version of Spamfighter”. Personally I think that is not a problem, otherwise if you really like the product you could buy a professional license.
