Web browsers

18th November 2007

Later I’ll post a voting thingy about which web browser you prefer, now I want to bring your attentin to something else, here we go:

Netscape, oh Netscape, THE original browser and also communication tool for the internet with your built in mail and web design facility, net 2 phone I remember you recommended way ahead of the existense of Skype. Netscape invented javasript which is still the fundamental scripting language for easy web features (more advanced than simple HTML, but not requiring server side scripts like PHP or Micr$s$fts’s ASP.)

There’s a new browser in town

13th November 2007

Yes, really, a new browser. But base on Mozilla, still it’s a stand-alone download at has just recently come out of beta mode, so this is version 1.0 you can download. It is actually… very good. Still don’t beat my personal favourite though, which is Opera, but a pretty neat thing.

Flock is the name, and it calls itself the “social web browser”, and it kind of is. You know YouTube, Facebook, del.icio.us and so on? If you are active there you’ll love this browser. Check it out below.

Download Linux for free

23rd October 2007

This is the best Linux version I’ve tried, easy to install and has a nice and user friendly layout. There are many versions of Linux out there, and while some people have their own preferences I can recommend this one for everyone, including those who wish to try Linux for the first time, since it installs usually without any problems. That is often a problem with other releases.

Better Windows copy function

20th October 2007

The copy function in Windows is as we all know useless. For example when copying a large number of files, and and one error occures it simply cuts out, leaving up to you to find out exactly what already has been copied. You cannot pause/resume copying, and in the case of power failure or similar you don’t know where to pick up.

This small little freeare program fixes all that, and more. It is even faster than Windows’ own copy function. Totalcopy is your answer.

Spamfighter

11th October 2007

Are you tired of spam? If not, you cannot have had an email account for long. I think that you are tired of spam since you have found this blog, not because we would ever spam you but because it means you use the internet. I hate spam! And to combat that in an efficient way, including being able to go through the emails which my anti-spam program removes (just in case it was not spam) I feel rather comfortable using Spamfighter these days. It integrates well with Outlook incl. Outlook Express and related Microsoft Windows services.

Spamfighter is free, but if you wish they also have a commercial version. Personally I have used the free version for a long time and is very happy with it. It beats any other anti-spam softwares I’ve tried, and even if your web hosting server has an anti-spam filter it seldoms work very well, and you cannot always check the e-mails which they removed and thought were spam in case they deleted a message for you which was not spam.

Whenever you checks your mail all suspected spam emails will be moved to the designated spam folder, to keep your inbox clean. The program also comes with the ability to setup the spam filtering functions of course; how “hard” should the spam filter be, and black list and white list.

According to the company themselves this was what they had written today if you search for them on any of the major search engines which will display the content: “spamfighter is Europe’s leading Spam Filter developer, providing Spam Protection across the globe for more than three million home and corporate users.”

To make this story shorter you can read more and download a great piece of software here:

www.spamfighter.com

And NO! I/we are not affiliated with them in any way, this blog is for free.
Note: If you are using the free version the software will automatically insert a text at the bottom of every email you send saying that you are using the “free version of Spamfighter”. Personally I think that is not a problem, otherwise if you really like the product you could buy a professional license.

Listen to the radio

2nd October 2007

When I was a kid, I often went and picked up my grandmother’s mail at the mailbox. Too long a walk for my dear old grandmother. At least I could do it while not in school. I brought her the letters (bills mostly), the glossy advertising flyers and newspapers. While I “read” the cartoons in the newspapers and was treated to cookies and milk, what I do remember the most from my visits, these and all others, was that the radio was always on.

Later I learned that my grandfather, her husband, had been the local radio contact between the resistance fighters and the BBC/resistance leaders in London during the second World War. He passed away when I was 2, but his and thousands of other resitance fighters efforts played a major part in winning the war against the Nazi’s and was the main contribution to keeping the local spirit up.

During my teens I always listened to those late night music stations before falling asleep on my clock radio. But other than that, my favourite media was always; as a kid TV, then we got a video (VHS), then I got a computer- not really a media at that time though, but… - something happened. The radio was totally gone from my life with the advent of the internet.

Until now. While there are many radio software programs out there, both free and commercial, than most people know about, none has captured my interest very much until I found this one. I think it must have the largest collection of radio channels in the world (not checked though), and the best sound quality I’ve heard. You can of course also record the broadcasts (music etc.), and; not only from one channel but several at a time! If you want to listen to the radio, try this, and it’s free and according to the creators will always stay so.

This post was written for three reasons:

  • To let you guys know about a great piece of FREE software.
  • To support the “Democratic Voice of Burma” Oslo based radio channel due to the recent and still ongoing happenings in Burma.
  • For all freedom fighters past, present and future (a line taken from the great old “V” televison series, read about it on Wikipedia here. A new novel “V: The Second Generation”, a sequel to the first miniseries, is scheduled to be published this month.)
